Betting during the London 2012 Games
Betfair, the top UK betting company has made a deal to exchange information about irregular or suspicious betting patterns with the International Olympic Committee during the London 2012 Games.
The International Olympic Committee will have the right to request the identities of account holders who bet suspiciously and other betting transaction details as well.
Hugh Robertson, the UK Minister for Sports spoke about how illegal gambling could cause harm to the games. And it seems that the problem is even worse that doping ones. He further commented that one cannot underestimate the damage such illegal activities can bring as when spectators start having doubts about what they are seeing, this is when they will stop coming to the games and all of it will then crumble down.
The International Olympic Committee is also working with the Gambling Commission and the police to deal with illegal betting organizations during the London 2012 Games.
Betfair had signed a similar deal with the IOC in Beijing four years ago. London 2012 is said to be one of the biggest event ever and Betfair is ready with offerings on every single gold medal event.
Betfair will use technology and its team of integrity experts to ensure that any suspicious betting activity is investigated and information passed to the International Olympic Committee. The Company even has had exclusive software developed to help them identify suspicious transactions.
Betfair’s chief legal and regulatory affairs officer, Martin Cruddace said that both the IOC and Betfair concerns are the same; ensuring that customers are able to bet on sporting events in a totally transparent and secure manner.
